What custom software development means
Custom software is built around how your business already works, instead of forcing your team to work around a product built for someone else. It can be an internal system such as a CRM or ERP, a customer-facing platform, or a SaaS product you sell to others.
Techrsv designs, builds and maintains custom software from our office in Dehradun for companies across India and abroad. Analysis, design, development, testing and support are done by one in-house team, and you own every line of code we write.
Custom software or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made tools are the right answer for many problems. Custom software earns its cost when your process is what makes you different, when you are paying for many tools that do not talk to each other, or when per-user licence fees keep rising as you grow.
| Off-the-shelf software | Custom software | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to your process | You adapt to the product | Built around your workflow |
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher |
| Ongoing cost | Per-user or per-month fees that grow with your team | Hosting and maintenance, no per-seat licence |
| Integrations | Limited to what the vendor supports | Connects to the tools you already use |
| Ownership | The vendor owns the product and your roadmap | You own the code and decide what comes next |
| Time to start | Days | Weeks to months, released in stages |
A common middle path is to keep off-the-shelf tools for standard jobs such as email and accounting, and build custom software for the part of the business that is unique, connected to everything else.
Signs your business needs custom software
- Your team copies data between spreadsheets and tools every day, and mistakes creep in at each step.
- You pay for five or more subscriptions that each cover part of the job and still do not share data.
- Licence fees rise every time you hire, because each new person needs another seat.
- Reports take days to compile, so decisions are made on last month's numbers.
- Customers wait on manual steps such as quotes, approvals or order updates that could happen automatically.
- Your way of working is your advantage, and no product on the market supports it without workarounds.
If two or more of these sound familiar, a focused custom system usually pays for itself through time saved and errors avoided.
What we build
Each area below has its own page with features, process and FAQs.
Business management software
- CRM software: lead capture, pipelines, follow-ups and sales reporting shaped to your sales process.
- ERP software: one system for purchasing, inventory, production, sales and finance.
- HRMS software: employee records, attendance, leave, payroll inputs and appraisals.
- Accounting software: invoicing, GST-ready billing, ledgers and reports for businesses that outgrow generic tools.
- Inventory management software: stock across warehouses and outlets, reorder alerts and barcode workflows.
Products and platforms
- SaaS development: multi-tenant products with subscriptions, roles and admin dashboards, for founders and companies selling software.
- Real estate platforms: property listings, lead management and project sales tools for developers and brokers.
Engineering services
- Cloud and DevOps: hosting on AWS or Google Cloud, automated deployments, backups and monitoring.
- Cybersecurity: security reviews, hardening and fixes for applications and infrastructure.
- Staff augmentation: our developers working inside your team when you need capacity, not a whole project.
Software usually needs a front end people enjoy using. Our website development and mobile app development teams build the web and app interfaces on top of the systems described here.
Industries we build for
The same engineering serves very different businesses. Some of the sectors we build software for:
- Education: school management systems, learning management systems and student information systems for schools, coaching institutes and colleges.
- Retail and e-commerce: order, inventory and marketplace systems that sit behind online stores; see ecommerce development.
- Travel and transport: booking, dispatch and fleet tools; see our travel and transportation software.
- Real estate: listing platforms, lead management and project sales tracking.
- Manufacturing and distribution: ERP, purchase and inventory systems across plants and warehouses.
- Healthcare and wellness: appointment, records and billing systems with careful handling of personal data.
- Professional services: CRM, project tracking and billing for agencies, consultancies and firms.
Technology we use
We choose the stack for the problem and for how easy it will be for you to maintain, not for novelty.
| Layer | Technologies |
|---|---|
| Web front end | React, Next.js |
| Back end and APIs | Node.js, Laravel, Python |
| Mobile apps | Flutter, React Native |
| Databases | PostgreSQL |
| Cloud and infrastructure | AWS, Google Cloud, Docker |
| AI features | OpenAI models for search, summaries, chat and automation |
What custom software costs
The honest answer is that it depends on scope. A focused internal tool and a multi-tenant SaaS product are very different builds. What drives the cost:
- Number of modules and user roles: each screen, workflow and permission level adds work.
- Integrations: payment gateways, accounting tools, WhatsApp, SMS, email or existing databases.
- Data migration: moving years of records out of spreadsheets or an old system.
- Platforms: web only, or web plus Android and iOS apps.
- Security and compliance needs for sensitive data such as health, finance or personal records.
- Support after launch: hosting, monitoring, updates and new features.
We usually recommend starting with the smallest version that solves the main problem, then adding modules once your team is using it. After a free consultation you get a written scope, a timeline split into sprints, and a cost for each stage.
How long it takes
Most projects release something usable within the first few sprints, then grow in stages. A focused internal tool is typically live in weeks; an ERP or a SaaS product with several modules is delivered over months, with each module going live as it is ready rather than everything at the end.
Ownership, security and quality
- You own 100% of the code, the designs and the data, and the source code lives in a repository you control.
- Weekly demos of working software, so you see progress and can change direction early.
- Testing at every stage: code review, automated tests where they pay off, and testing on real devices before release.
- Security by default: role-based access, encrypted connections, input validation, regular backups and updates.
- Documentation and handover, so another team could maintain the system if you ever chose to.
After launch: maintenance and growth
Software is never really finished. Once your system is live, the work shifts to keeping it fast, secure and useful as the business changes:
- Monitoring and backups so problems are caught before users notice, and data can always be restored.
- Security and dependency updates applied on a regular schedule, not only when something breaks.
- Performance tuning as data grows from thousands of records to millions.
- New modules and integrations added in small releases, based on what your team asks for most.
- Usage reviews that show which features people rely on and which can be simplified.
Why companies work with a Dehradun-based team
Being in Dehradun lets us keep an experienced, stable in-house team at a cost below the big metro agencies, without handing work to freelancers. For clients in India we work in the same time zone and can meet in person; for international clients we overlap working hours for calls and demos.
How to choose a custom software development company
Before you sign with any company, including us, ask:
- Who owns the code and the servers? Get it in writing that the source code and accounts are yours.
- Will I see working software every week or two? Long silences followed by a big reveal are where projects go wrong.
- Who is on the team? Know whether the work is done in-house or passed to subcontractors.
- Have you built something similar? Ask to see a comparable system, not only screenshots.
- What happens after launch? Agree support, response times and the cost of changes up front.
- How do you handle changes in scope? Requirements always evolve; the process for that should be clear before you start.
Adding AI to business software
Many systems we build now include AI where it saves real time: summarising records, drafting replies, extracting data from documents, searching across years of files, or answering staff questions from your own knowledge base. We add these features to the workflow where they help, with human review where accuracy matters. For automating whole processes, see our AI automation service.
